The Goldsmiths' Craft and Design Council is a non profit making organisation founded over one hundred years ago in 1908. Today, the Council continues its work from its original remit: "to encourage, stimulate and promote the pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and design amongst all those in the United Kingdom who work within silversmithing, goldsmithing, jewellery and the allied crafts."

My jewellery style has evolved over the last year into more of a conceptual jewellery designer. This pendant symbolises so much. This represents diversity and inclusion.

Last summer was the 'lighbulb' moment for me- a 'switch'.

Over the last year, I have been working on being comfortable in embracing 'my voice'. I have been doing lots of activism work in the jewellery industry supporting Black and first-generation jewellers with diversity and inclusion issues.

 This a gender-neutral pendant.

When designing this pendant I was thinking about hair discrimination and different hair textures.

Cornrows or canerows are a traditional style of braids in which the hair is braided very close to the scalp, using an underhand, upward motion to make a continuous, raised row. I added three strands of cornrows around the lightbulb to highlight different hair textures and the awareness of hair discrimination. Also at the same time highlights unity - all cultures embrace braids! A braid is a complex structure or pattern formed by interlacing two or more strands of flexible material such as textile yarns, wire, or hair.

With this pendant-I am going to donate a portion of the proceeds of the sale to Domestic Violence charity Sistah Space https://www.sistahspace.org/

Sistah Space works with African heritage women & girls who've experienced domestic or sexual abuse or who have lost a loved one to domestic violence. The survivors are from many different sections of the African & Caribbean community, including the Rastafarian/ Grassroots community - who are often on the fringes of society. Rastafarian women are among those who have the highest rate of underreporting.
