Jessica Cole Owner of Roccia Jewellery an African Culture Focused Jeweller

So, below I ask Jessica some questions to get to know her more.

Tell me about yourself

"My name is Jessica, I am 27 years old and I live in London. I love drawing and creating my own DIY projects like trinket boxes and jewellery organizers. In my spare time, I love to play the piano, read books and catch up with the latest shows on Netflix and my guilty pleasure, The Real Housewives of Atlanta.  I've always been interested in jewellery and handmade items and I would love visiting the markets on the weekend and buying unique and handmade jewellery pieces. I love learning new skills and I have taught myself everything I know about jewellery making through YouTube and Google. I am looking forward to seeing my progress and development in the next couple of years."

Walk me through the step-by-step process that you went through to get to where you are today

"When I was in sixth form I learnt how to make bracelets from watching a YouTube video. I bought a small pack of different crystal beads from Hobbycraft as well as elastic and a small jewellery making tool kit. I first started making these bracelets for family and friends selling them at £3.00 and £4.00 each. I was so proud of my creations and the new skill I had learnt. I then decided a few years later, after I graduated from university to open an Etsy store. I learnt how to make simple beaded earrings and necklaces using semi precious stones and opened my Etsy shop in 2017 naming it Roccia Jewellery. I got my first order about a month after opening. I then went to a few Christmas markets which went well. However a few years later in 2019, I decided that I wanted more out of Roccia Jewellery and decided to rebrand. I wanted to make jewellery inspired by African Culture as it is important to me and a big part of who I am and I wanted to educate people on the importance of African jewellery within our culture. I made more sophisticated and unique jewellery pieces which had a meaning and I used new and more expensive materials. Sales grew and I launched my first website in November 2020. I work on my business every day and I am always looking for ways to improve my business and my skills."

Do you have any specific goals for the rest of this year?

"This year I am starting a YouTube channel called Jeweller in the Making, so one of my goals is to have the channel up and running and release new videos consistently and build my subscribers. Another one of my goals is to grow sales on my website as the majority of my sales come from my Etsy store. "

If a kid walked up to asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give ‘em your best tip, what would it be?

"If they have an interest or hobby that they would like to turn into a business or career, they should work hard on it and turn their dreams into a reality as life's too short to be stuck doing something you aren't interested in. So work hard towards your goals and your happiness and be kind and respectful to everyone you meet along the way."

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?

"I would be a Cocoa tree. The first reason is that it is an evergreen tree and therefore functional all year. I love working at all times of the year so I think this relates to me very well. The tree is also tropical, as am I (even though I live in England where it snows in April!). The Cocoa tree also has many different functions. The tree grows cocoa and the seeds can be used for chocolate liquor, cocoa butter and chocolate and I think this compliments my different interests and talents.  "
